Looking Forward by Looking Back

February 1st is Dr. Pillai’s birthday, so it won’t be long until we again get to celebrate with him!

To help prepare for this occasion, here are some of our favorite photos of past birthdays that were celebrated in India at HoPE Learning Centers…

Moving ahead, we encourage you to sponsor a HoPE Center child (for only $9 a month), an entire HoPE Learning Center (for $360 a month), an elderly person in dire need (For just $30 a month), OR, we also hope that these photos will inspire your heart to think of a special recurring monthly amount to thank our beloved founder for all that he brings into our lives every day!

Uma Gains New Awareness

Uma was a baby in her mother’s arms when her father died and she and her mother had to move to a village called Kizhavanam in search of any means of survival. They lived with Uma’s grandfather, who took care of them both for a short period of time until he died and left them with only the thatched hut they lived in (which leaked during the rains and was unbearably hot during the summer).

Due to a lack of money, Uma’s mother was forced to go out for work to provide for her infant daughter. Uma was cared for by neighbors. As she grew older, she deeply longed for her mother’s attention and care and she was often angry that she was left behind each day. She stayed up late every night to watch her worn out mother eat leftover food scraps and get ready for bed. Uma also woke up early in the morning while her mother slept to cook breakfasts that weren’t really enough for two people, before she got ready for school.

Uma says that only after she was welcomed into our HoPE Learning Center did she learn what really happened outside of her home. After spending long days being angry at her mother for leaving her home alone, she now understands why. She now helps her mother during weekends at work so that they have time together to catch up.

Uma says she feels grateful for her teachers and friends who helped her better understand her mother’s situation and choices. She is also grateful for career guidance, nutritious snacks, inner confidence and a greater sense of awareness about her power to take actions and make decisions about her life.

It doesn’t take much to help a special child, like Uma. Right now, only $9 a month covers the costs of HoPE Center sponsorship, tutoring, lessons, materials and daily mini meals. For only $300 a month, you can sponsor an entire HoPE Learning Center!

Resolution Solution!

While many of us struggle to lose weight, quit smoking, go back to school, or stick to goals aligned with other popular New Year’s resolutions, children all over the world struggle to make it through each day while hungry and living in dire circumstances.

Within our HoPE Learning Centers alone, 4040 children face many challenges associated with poverty, but these children also thrive among friends while they receive daily nutritious snacks, traditional academic tutoring, and innovative lessons that help transform the ways they think and act.

They also work to set and stick to their goals, and the overwhelming reports about the HoPE Learning Center children this month showed how much they get involved in creative activities:

Nandini’s speech in English for National Youth Day was inspiring.

Pavithra shared her divine mission to help elderly people.

Nithesh Kumar’s celebrated Pet Day by sharing interesting stories about how he admires and takes very good care of his parrot.

These are just three of the 4040 stories of children who have so little, but do so much to lead exemplary lives, often centered on helping others.

While doing whatever it takes to stick to your personal New Year’s resolutions, here is a possible solution: setting and keeping a resolution centered on others is a great way to reduce karma!

It doesn’t take much to support and feed a special child like Nadini, Pavithra or Nithesh Kumar. Right now, only $9 a month covers the costs of HoPE Center sponsorship, tutoring, lessons, materials, and daily mini meals. For only $300 a month, you can sponsor an entire HoPE Learning Center (which will cover the daily costs for 40 children)!

It’s Not Too Late!

As 2016 comes to an end, many of us feel like the holidays flew by too quickly to accomplish everything that we wished to accomplish. Some of us made heartfelt donations to non-profit organizations. Others were not able to do so.  Either way, it is never too late give a gift of any size to benefit children or elderly people.

Also, if you live in the USA or India, you have until midnight on December 31st to make a 2016 tax-deductible contribution to one of our programs:

Gifts That Keep On Giving!

Gifts are thoughtful and to be appreciated. Some last longer than others, like: recipes, perennial flowers, fruit of the month clubs and gift cards. These are gifts that seem to keep giving back to the recipients long after they are given.

Yet, there are other types of gifts that keep giving back to the recipients and to the world. Choose one or more options below to provide relief and empowerment to children and elders. Select the “gift donation” option to also send a nice e-card to loved ones to let them know that you did this in their name.

Give the Gift of Education -

A Genuine HoPE Center Santa Claus!

In 2012, we shared stories about Jiccky, a true HoPE Hero and role model. He is a successful businessman who works hard to share his prosperity with the poorest of poor people.

Gifted with authentic passion to help the rural poor learn how to live fulfilling and empowered lives, he is personally involved in innovative community initiatives.  He is also one of the first sponsors of our HoPE Learning Centers.

It is now nearing the end of 2016, and he is still interested in every aspect of the lives of HoPE Learning Center children.  In fact, in addition to directing his businesses, he generously sponsors 440 children within 11 HoPE Learning Centers!

Tripura Foundation and the children heartily thank you, Jiccky!

It doesn’t take much to transform the life of a child… or the lives of 40 children!  Right now, only $9 a month covers the costs of HoPE Center sponsorship, tutoring, lessons, materials, daily mini meals, and CHRISTMAS for a child.  For only $300 a month, you can be like Jiccky and bring Christmas to an entire HoPE Learning Center all year long!

Rathisha Thrives

Rathisha is a typical fifth grader from Karaikalmedu. She has five best friends. She most enjoys playing volleyball and carom between studies. Her favorite color is ocean blue.

She excels in most academic subjects, especially English, but this hasn’t always been the case.

When Rathisha first came to our HoPE Learning Center, she was shy, withdrawn and an average student at best. Her teacher and mentor, Ms. Revathi, noticed that she had a tough time concentrating, possibly due to hunger, a common challenge to children within our Centers.

Even though millions of children go to school hungry every day, few people realize how side effects of hunger significantly limit their social and academic abilities.

Thanks to expert tutoring and daily mini meals, Rathisha now aspires to become an English professor. Rathisha says that she is very grateful for her tutor. She also continues to enjoy her favorite food item, Biriyani, a dish of long-grain rice served with vegetables and yogurt.

Her father, Ramakannu, a deep-sea fisherman who risks his life on most days to feed his family, and her mother, Tamilselvi, a homemaker, are both very grateful for the improvements that they see in their daughter’s grades and behavior. They can now work in peace, knowing that Rathisha will continue to grow and thrive.

While enjoying fine feasts with family and friends this Thanksgiving Holiday, remember that it doesn’t take much to support and feed a special child like Rathisha.

Babu’s Grades Improve

Thanks in part to Tripura Foundation sponsors and teachers, Babu is about to successfully complete his eighth-grade education this academic year.

When Babu was enrolled in our HoPE Learning Center last year, he was labelled a “dull student.” His grades were far below average and he did not socialize with other kids his age.

From the first day of his enrollment, teachers made time to tutor him in Math and Social Studies while his new HoPE Center peers gave him encouragement and confidence during social events and planned activities.

Most importantly, he was given nutritious mini meals every day, which helped increase his span of concentration.

Even though millions of children go to school hungry every day, few people realize how the side effects of hunger significantly limit their social and academic abilities.

In the case of Babu, this was proven true. Due to tutoring, social encouragement and healthy food, Babu successfully passed all five of his required classes and also made friends.

He says that he loves coming to the HoPE Learning Center and he likes eating chick peas most of all.

While enjoying fine feasts with family and friends this Thanksgiving Holiday, remember that it doesn’t take much to support and feed a special child like Babu.

Right now, only $9 a month covers the costs of HoPE Center sponsorship, tutoring, lessons, materials and daily mini meals. For only $300 a month, you can sponsor an entire HoPE Learning Center (which will cover the daily costs for 40 children)!
