Make Every Day a Holiday to Fight Hunger

Q: What is the date of the holiday to celebrate the fight against hunger?

A: It depends…

On May 28, World Hunger Awareness Day is celebrated in the UK and a number of western nations. It emphasizes how better nutrition builds better citizens.

In 2008, Feeding American established September as World Hunger Month with a goal of raising awareness about the effects of hunger and encouraging people to take action all month to finds ways to take action to fight it.

World Food Security Day is celebrated on October 6 and World Food Day on October 16. Both have similar themes about growing populations, climate change and what shifts in agricultural and economic trends are necessary to keep people fed, especially in third world countries.

There are many other holidays dedicated to hunger and feedings as well as the fact that most holidays feature celebratory feasts with special seasonal foods.

Surprisingly, even with our current high human population, hunger is not caused by a lack of resources. The world produces enough food to feed the planet’s 7 billion-plus people, so why are so many going hungry? Poverty and disparity in incomes are mostly to blame. According to experts, hunger exists mainly because most hungry people don’t have the resources to grow or buy food.

On the plus, we at Tripura Foundation teach lessons about the importance of cultivating healthy food as well as annually serve almost a million mini-meals to poor children at our HoPE Learning Centers and staple foods to elderly people in nearby villages.

We believe that every day should be a special holiday to fight hunger. So, we invite you to join us in this fight by sponsoring a HoPE Center child (for only 30 cents a day) or an entire HoPE Learning Center (for $360 a month)! Your modest contribution will help tip the scales in favor of the eradication of hunger and starvation!

We Can Feed Our Future Leaders!

  • Surenthar aspires to become a teacher to educate the children in his village when he grows up.
  • Pradeepa excels in Biology and would like to become a doctor so she can help heal people who are ill and poor.
  • Kishore is shy but very grateful for friends and endeavors to one day become a policeman.

So, what do these three children have in common in addition to being potential future leaders? They are happy, fulfilled children who now thrive within HoPE Learning Centers! Yet, up until recently, they had something in common with 66 million other children – they often attended classes while hungry.

Childhood hunger often leads to stunting (restricted height), wasting (lessened height to weight ratios, and restricted abilities to learn and thrive. Worse, 3.1 million children die from acute hunger each year!

On the plus side, we at Tripura Foundation annually serve almost a million mini-meals to poor children at our HoPE Learning Centers. Many of these children otherwise subsist on watery rice, so the mini-meals offer more in quantity and nutrition than the rest of their food during the remainder of their day.

Sponsor a HoPE Center child for only 30 cents a day ($9 a month) or an entire HoPE Learning Center for $360 a month. Your modest contribution will uplift the lives and destinies of our future leaders!

What is the Number One Cause of Death in the World?

Hunger remains the Number One cause of death in the world. Currently, there are 820 million chronically hungry people in the world.

One third of the world’s hungry live in India. Ten million people die every year of chronic hunger and hunger-related diseases. Over 7,000 Indians die of hunger every day.

At Tripura Foundation, we annually serve almost a million mini-meals to poor children at our HoPE Learning Centers. Many of these children subsist on watery rice, so the mini-meals are more in quantity and nutrition than their food during the remainder of their days.

In addition, we serve over 75,000 meals each year to destitute elderly people who have been abandoned by loved ones and cannot afford to feed themselves on meager monthly pensions.

Join us to save the lives of vulnerable, hungry children and elderly people RIGHT NOW! It doesn’t take much time or cost much money to save lives. In fact, every dollar you donate places healthy food into the hands and mouths of hungry children and elderly people.

What is the Greatest Single Thing Each Of Us Can Do?

Tripura Foundation began with the mission of feeding the poor. Our founder, Dr. Baskaran Pillai believes that the greatest thing each of us can do is to serve a meal to someone who is hungry.

He founded Tripura Foundation U.S.A. in 1989. In 1999, dedicated volunteers prepared and delivered hot meals to dwellers in low-income neighborhoods of Chennai, India. Since then, we have been feeding the underprivileged and destitute all over India.

Currently, we annually serve almost a million mini-meals to poor children at our HoPE Learning Centers.

Feeding hungry people seems quite basic. It is, and it is also extremely essential, especially because as regions of the western United States recover from years of drought due to the generosity of recent storm clouds, people in India pray for rain, since they are now facing water scarcity, damaged crops, food scarcity and widespread hunger.

Yet, even in times of drought and hunger, solutions are at hand to keep the poorest people fed and alive. YOU are the solution. Every dollar you donate sets healthy food into the hands and mouths of hungry children and elderly people.

It’s Not Too Late!

As 2016 comes to an end, many of us feel like the holidays flew by too quickly to accomplish everything that we wished to accomplish. Some of us made heartfelt donations to non-profit organizations. Others were not able to do so.  Either way, it is never too late give a gift of any size to benefit children or elderly people.

Also, if you live in the USA or India, you have until midnight on December 31st to make a 2016 tax-deductible contribution to one of our programs:

Gifts That Keep On Giving!

Gifts are thoughtful and to be appreciated. Some last longer than others, like: recipes, perennial flowers, fruit of the month clubs and gift cards. These are gifts that seem to keep giving back to the recipients long after they are given.

Yet, there are other types of gifts that keep giving back to the recipients and to the world. Choose one or more options below to provide relief and empowerment to children and elders. Select the “gift donation” option to also send a nice e-card to loved ones to let them know that you did this in their name.

Introducing the HoPE Survival Gift Pack

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for your love and support for our HoPE for Chennai initiative! In Phase 2 of our initiative, we are delivering HoPE Survival Gift Packs to the poorest people who have been hit the hardest by the Chennai floods.  Their tiny huts have either been washed away or badly damaged, and the few belongings they had are gone as well.  No work has been available for at least 6 weeks due to the rains and then the flood, so they literally have no money for food.
Introducing the HoPE Survival Gift Pack!

Yesterday, after completing a distribution of HoPE Survival Gift Packs to 100 people in a village near Chennai, our Tripura India Trustee Yadeesh called me. He shared that he was deeply moved by the plight of the people – most of them were abandoned by relatives, some were blind, others were suffering from leprosy, or very old.

Will Be Receiving the Survival Packs

Gift Pack Recipients

One particular elderly lady whose roof collapsed in the midst of the cyclone was stranded in her hut and trapped in water, alone and helpless.  Since the flood, she has not been able to walk due to being trapped in water for so long.

Yadeesh told me that he was so grateful that our HoPE Survival Gift Packs were going to people who were so carefully selected by our HoPE Center champions on the ground, and so very deserving.

Our HoPE Survival Gift Pack is certainly the greatest Christmas gift these good souls could ever receive. We greatly appreciate all donations made to “HoPE for Chennai” so we can continue to bring HoPE to those who need it the most in the aftermath of this disaster.

Love, Mohini

Guru Purnima: An Auspicious Time to Give

July 31, 2015, signifies a most remarkable day of the year. It is the first full moon after the Summer Solstice and is customarily known as Guru Purnima – a day to give gratitude to your Guru.

Dr. Pillai founded the Tripura Foundation to change the world by eliminating extreme poverty and hunger while empowering children and women with holistic education opportunities. In just four years, we have gone from six HoPE Learning Centers to 100, serving 4040 children in India.

Children like Sarala, who started off in the program as a young high schooler and immediately thrived in computer science – a field she never would have had access to in her other studies. With help from the Tripura Foundation, she recently earned her Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science while serving as a mentor for younger students at the HoPE Learning Center. Sarala now attends a prestigious College in Chennai and is working on her Master’s degree.

Stories like this from the Tripura Foundation don’t have traditional endings – in fact, they hardly have endings at all. What starts off as a single donation becomes a rippling effect across the globe. One child receives hope, kindness, and a life-changing opportunity, then continues to pass that lesson on to more children. The cycle continues.

This is the lesson we learn from Dr. Pillai – one action, one click of a button, can have a massive impact on the entire world. And it never stops. The pledge you make today continues to grow in magnitude as more and more people across the world work together to eradicate extreme pain and suffering.

Celebrate Guru Purnima with us and Dr. Pillai by making a donation to support one of 17 currently unsponsored HoPE Learning Centers. Through the center, children are given education, mini meals, extra curricular activities, outings, basic medical care, and other basic necessities.

A monthly gift of $350 provides funding for one center’s monthly services, so consider a recurring gift. We are grateful for any amount during this particularly auspicious time of year.

A Beacon of HoPE

Malayayi and her daughter

Malayayi, a single mother, has gone from from feeling utterly hopeless and attempting to take her own life, to shining as a beacon of hope to all of the women in her village.

Malayayi was born into a family of ten whose elderly parents had little to offer their children. By the time she came of age, Malayayi was married, but her marriage didn’t last. After four months, her husband abandoned her while she was pregnant.

She was left heartbroken and alone. With no one to depend on, Malayayi took refuge with members of her family until she gave birth.  Malayayi was blessed with a baby girl, but was in no emotional state to celebrate the birth.

Malayayi tells us, “I had attempted suicides a number of times and failed. I had no hope and had no desire of living. Even though I had my daughter I was in no position to offer her a future. I felt useless.

Then a ray of HoPE shined into Malayayi’s life.  She continues, “When I thought all was lost, I was offered the priceless position to work as a teacher in a HoPE Learning Center. I have the skills for teaching and I speak very well. I thanked God for answering all my prayers and took this as a sign from the almighty to live a life for the sake of my only child.

The salary given to me was very essential to feed myself and my daughter every day as I had no other means of survival.

As I became a teacher, I started realizing that there’s more to life than what I had thought. My life gradually changed from a woeful one to a contented one. Seeing the children every day, watching them smile made my days. Every day when I woke up, my first thought would be what more can I do for the children? I found happiness in their happiness. I temporarily forgot my miserable life and started making the best out of my time with the children.”

By working at her local HoPE Learning Center for 3 years, she has brought about remarkable changes in the children. She says that Phonemic Intelligence and yoga helped her become calm and peaceful. She practices them regularly and says they also help her focus.

Her previous struggles not only strengthened her, but they also helped her show everyone that with dedication and hard work anyone could achieve their goals.

She currently lives happily with her daughter and continues to teach at her local Tripura Foundation HoPE Learning Center, spending time with the children to help make their lives better.

Assisting Rosetta and her Granddaughter

Rosetta

Rosetta, a resident of the South Bronx for over 40 years, has been attending the Melrose Mobile Market (one of Tripura Foundation’s partner food banks) since its launch in October 2004.

Rosetta lives with her granddaughter and says that the free produce distribution at the market helps her get through the month, whereas she and her granddaughter would otherwise be struggling and hungry.

She says: “The green vegetables are fresh,” and “We all work together and the food is delicious. And the food is fresh. I feel comfortable out here because everyone is so nice. They help me.”

Rosetta attends the Mobile Market twice a month and cooks the items she receives with her granddaughter.

We are happy to be able to assist many elderly folks in making ends meet each month, helping them live with more dignity.  However, we are only able to continue assisting people like Rosetta with donations from kind and generous hearts such as yours.

For just $10 a month, you can make a huge difference in the lives of those in need.  Click the ‘Donate Now’ button below to make your contribution.  Thank you.
